Navigating Seasonal depression (SAD)
Transitions can be really challenging.
When I was younger, I didn’t pay much attention to the seasonal transitions. More specifically, I noticed the seasons changing but I didn’t notice how those changes impacted me. I definitely don’t remember a change in my behavior or what I ate or how I took care of myself just because it was a different season.
As I get older, I notice more and more the way new seasons can affect my overall well-being. There is something about routines changing or changes to the weather that can make your entire system feel overwhelmed. This is so tough, and if you can relate, you are absolutely not alone.
I invite you to consider, how can we care for ourselves DIFFERENTLY (while honoring your capacity)?
You are not alone if you are experiencing:
A loss of energy
An increase in sleep
Craving dense and warm foods
Eating more
Weight fluctuations
Feeling sad
Crying more often
Difficulty concentrating
Increased anxiety
More disconnected
More distracted
Decrease in movement
Withdrawal from social situations
During this season of transition, I encourage you to consider whether or not any of the following could be beneficial to you.
Prioritizing self-care
Stepping into the sunlight every single day (or just outside in general if there isn’t sunlight)
Quieting your surroundings (more social media breaks)
Warm spices in your foods and drinks (think fun turmeric lattes, nutmeg curries….)
More whole, dense meals
Daily journaling
Gentle movement
Embracing rest
Weighted blankets
Heated blankets
Warm water
Phone calls with friends
More candles
Longer showers
Contrast showers
Prioritizing night time rituals

If you’re feeling heavy in this seasonal transition, you deserve comfort.
It’s not always going to feel easy to get out of bed, brush your teeth, and step into the limited amount of sunlight that we have in a day, but you deserve to take care of yourself, even when it’s the last thing you feel like you can do.
